Empathetic, highly skilled and respected in his field, Dr. Andrew Kokkino practices all aspects of neurosurgery and specializes in the treatment of brain and spinal tumors.
Patients benefit from the latest technological advances in surgical neuro-oncology, such as frameless image-guidance, intraoperative ultrasound, intracavitary chemotherapy, Gamma knife radiosurgery, and interstitial brachytherapy.
Dr. Kokkino graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in 1992 and completed a surgical internship at the University of Cincinnati Medical School. He fulfilled a neurosurgical residency, followed by chief residency at the University of Cincinnati-Mayfield Clinic program. During his residency, he completed an American Cancer Society fellowship in neuro-oncology.
After his chief residency, he finished a clinical fellowship in surgical neuro-oncology. In 1999, he was an assistant professor in the department of neurosurgery at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, where he focused on the treatment of brain tumors. He joined Oregon Neurosurgery in 2000 and continues to develop minimally-invasive techniques in spinal surgery.
Dr. Kokkino was drawn to neurosurgery because of its complexity and found that his empathetic nature made him a natural fit in caring for patients.
In his free time, he appreciates being with family, traveling and outdoor activities.
Attentive, thoughtful and expertly trained, Dr. Daniel Hutton practices all areas of neurological surgery but focuses on the surgical treatment of the spine. Dr. Hutton believes in a holistic approach, thoroughly counseling his patients on surgical and nonsurgical treatment options, so they can make well-informed decisions about their care.
Board-certified in neurological surgery by the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, Dr. Hutton has published and lectured extensively on a national level. He earned his medical degree at Oklahoma State University in Tulsa in 2003 and completed his neurological surgery internship and residency at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, California, one of the nation’s busiest trauma centers.
After graduation, he fulfilled an AO ASIF complex spinal and reconstructive surgery fellowship at University of California Davis. While there, he focused on the surgical treatment of spinal degeneration, deformity, traumatic injuries and minimally invasive approaches to the spine.
Dr. Hutton feels fulfilled by the intricacy of his work and the positive impact he’s able to have on restoring patients’ quality of life in the most minimally invasive way possible.
When he’s not seeing patients, he likes to run, snow-ski and mountain bike.
Dr. Nayar is a highly skilled neurosurgeon specializing in both brain and spine procedures, with advanced expertise in minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS), complex spinal deformities, and robotic-assisted techniques. He earned his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation’s premier training programs.
Following his chief residency, Dr. Nayar pursued additional advanced training through a year-long AO Spine fellowship and a Complex Spine Surgery fellowship at UPMC, where he trained under internationally recognized spine experts. He also completed specialized training in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, gaining expertise in the multimodal treatment of brain tumors. His research contributions include numerous peer-reviewed publications in spine and neurosurgical journals.
Known for his precision in the operating room and his compassionate approach to care, Dr. Nayar is deeply committed to improving patients’ quality of life. He prioritizes personalized care and explores all treatment options—surgical and non-surgical—to ensure the best outcomes.
When he’s not working with patients, Dr. Nayar enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending quality time with his family.
Sympathetic and proficient, Dr. Peter Kosek’s goal has always been to ensure that pain is treated as seriously as any other medical condition. In addition to working with patients to help them regain their quality of life, he is dedicated to improving the standard of care for chronic pain sufferers.
After receiving his medical degree at the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Kosek completed his residency in anesthesiology at Stanford, which included research in neurobiology. He then joined the faculty at Stanford as a cardiac anesthesiologist.
At Oregon Health & Science University, he was a member of the adult and pediatric cardiac anesthesia faculty and was an interim director of pain management.
In Eugene, he focused on pain management full time and founded Pain Consultants of Oregon in 1998. He joined Oregon Neurosurgery in 2017.
Board-certified by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and board-certified in pain management, Dr. Kosek lectures and instructs on pain management and has a courtesy professor appointment at the University of Oregon. An aspiring chemist and mathematician, he is a certified principle investigator through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals and has been involved in more than 25 pain-related clinical trials.
Dr. Kosek has served on numerous boards and advisory committees, and was appointed by the governor to the Oregon Pain Management Commission, serving a seven-year term. A former president of the Lane County Medical Society, he remains an active member of the Board of Trustees of the Oregon Medical Association. Dr. Kosek is also the current president of the Oregon Chapter of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.
An avid; (if less-than-particularly skilled) fisherman, beekeeper and gardener, Dr. Kosek enjoys being outdoors. In his free time, he can be found searching for ripe tomatoes and salad greens in his greenhouse. Although he hasn’t convinced his four children to join him, they do eat the vegetables he grows.
Compassionate, dedicated, and experienced, Dr. Valerie Coon is a highly skilled neurosurgeon who practices all areas of neurological surgery. Her focus centers on brain and spinal cord trauma, tumors, and critical care neurosurgery.
Dr. Coon completed her undergraduate degree in Neurobiology with honors at the University of California, Davis; following that, she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at Stanford University School of Medicine.
Dr. Coon went on to complete her neurosurgical residency at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. During her residency, she did research in the Daniel Fults Laboratory, Department of Neurological Surgery, where she studied the complex nature of brain tumors. Later, in 2010, she completed a clinical fellowship, in Neurocritical Care, a subspecialty of neurosurgery that treats life-threatening conditions of the brain and spinal cord.
Known as a good listener, Dr. Coon radiates an approachable, assuring style that encourages open communication with her patients. Her counseling puts patients first, giving them comfort and a greater understanding about their condition and treatment options available.
Dr. Coon joined Oregon Neurosurgery in 2018 after completing six years of neurosurgical practice in Salem, Oregon. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
In her leisure time, she enjoys exploring Oregon’s scenic hiking trails with family and friends, and spending quality time with her daughter.
Compassionate, thoughtful and expertly trained, Dr Ozpinar practices all areas of neurological surgery but focuses on minimally invasive spine surgery, complex spinal deformity and spinal robotics.
Dr Ozpinar earned his medical degree at Oregon Health and Science University and completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the nation’s top training programs. As a graduating resident he was given the Aequanimitas award; a reflection of his humility, compassion and empathetic patient care.
After completing his chief year, Dr. Ozpinar completed a year-long fellowship in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center under the direction of internationally known faculty members to further refine his spinal surgery skills.
Dr. Ozpinar has authored numerous peer reviewed spine and neurosurgical papers. He is a frequent presenter at national and international spine symposiums. Dr Ozpinar’s publications can be viewed in the following Pubmed database: Alp Ozpinar – (nih.gov).
Dr. Ozpinar is an attentive listener, patient advocate, and a perfectionist. He strives to make a positive impact on each patient and improve their quality of care through both surgical and non-surgical approaches.
In his spare time, Dr. Ozpinar enjoys spending time with his family, competing in tennis tournaments, and participating in triathlons.
